Type A to a fault
Ep. 68: Learning your peers' holidays and traditions, the proper glass for the occasion, and cozying up to a festive sculpture.
Welcome to Wanderfull’s 68th episode, and if you celebrate Christmas, Merry Christmas! I’m Type A to a fault, so when I say I’m publishing on Monday, I’m publishing on Monday. I did write this in advance, so there’s that. I might still be in my pajamas, downing something festive, and unwrapping a gift or two when this gets into everyone’s inbox. Ah, technology.
A Tip for the Modern Worker
Learn about the holidays and traditions that your peers enjoy. You will work with all kinds of people from all over the world. We all enjoy significant events throughout the year inspired by religion, culture, or the countries in which we live. Learn about the importance of these events for those around you. Respect traditions and make accommodations for your colleagues to take part.
This tip is one of 365 in my Handbook for the Modern Worker. I have some colleagues who work in Belgrade, Serbia. Since they follow the Julian calendar, their Christmas Day, or Божић, is on January 7. That’s another day we’ll have fewer meetings, which is always good.
#365DayDraw
I drew this and wrote the accompanying annotation as part of my #365DayDraw project 7 years ago today.
Taking stock of our glassware, 2017 might have a few more martinis to help even out our wine glass usage.
We were gifted martini glasses in 2016, so that’s definitely where this one came from. I confess, though, that our wine glasses still get far more usage than these beautiful vessels. There’s not a ton of James Bond in me – I’m more dry and red, less shaken and stirred.
Commentary
We’ll keep this one short and sweet, okay? Amy and I have been enjoying FLRC’s scavenger hunt, taking special pride in being able to knock off all items for the week in one short run. This week called for a sculpture, and wouldn’t you know we have a house just a half mile down the road with many sculptures out front. This Santa hat-wearing creature wasn’t having my goofiness, but I captured the picture anyway.
Where’s the snow, you ask? With temps in the 50s, this is a pretty mild year for this week. Looks like winter returns with a vengeance next week.
Miscellanea
🧾 How do you feel about self-checkout? Love it or hate it, you have to admit RFID makes the self-checkout model at Uniqlo pretty cool.
🍿 Morning Brew shared a list of lists of “all the movies, TV shows, music, books, games, and podcasts you need to know.” Good to peruse and bookmark.
📝 And lastly, this one’s for the grammarians. You’ll DEFINITELY love XKCD’s cartoon from last week.
