đ Warm days, cool nights, and a whisper of water
Ep 57: Remembering younger years, the many faces of a waterfall, and an overflowing dose of miscellanea.
Amy and I continue to celebrate our dating anniversary this long holiday weekend. Todayâs a day off for me for that very good reason! 27 years ago we met up in New York City, enjoying Starbucks frappuccinos, walking Central Park in the crisp air, and ripping up the dance floor at Webster Hall.
A Tip for the Modern Worker
Know when youâre not needed. Think you have to attend a meeting because itâs on your calendar? Think again. This is especially true for recurring meetings where youâre added as an optional attendee. You know the meetings where sometimes youâre needed, but most of the time youâre not? Skip them. Be transparent with the organizer, and make sure they know youâre available if they need to call on you. When you schedule meetings, think about whoâs necessary and whoâs optional, indicating the distinction in the software if it supports it.
This tip is one of 365 in my Handbook for the Modern Worker. The cost of meetings can be staggering! Calculate the cost of the next meeting youâre in where you are not needed, or if nobodyâs needed (the one where the meeting couldâve been an email).
#365DayDraw
I drew this and wrote the accompanying annotation as part of my #365DayDraw project 7 years ago today.
The chalet we chose for a weekend getaway was quaint, with everything appointed as you'd expect. Perfect.
Ah, doesnât that look cozy and inviting? In 2016, Amy and I celebrated our 20th anniversary of dating by going to the Chalet of Canandaigua. We enjoyed in-room massages, and a delicious breakfast, and watched one of the debates leading up to the 2016 election.
Commentary
Fall is definitely here in upstate New York. The days last week were uncharacteristically warm, but the evenings were as cool as any other in October. This week is going to be much cooler. I thought Iâd share with you a few scenes of the season from Taughannock Falls State Park. The waterfall is definitely feeling the effects of lower creek levels, though weâre not in a drought right now. Iâm tempted to tell visitors to the overlook that weâve forgotten to turn the water on for the day.
This view from the south rim trail never gets old: it looks westward through the gorge, and the waterfall is just around the bend. This will just get more colorful in the coming weeks!
Two years ago we had a norâeaster in October, resulting in an impressive flow of water over the falls. The park has many faces, and though itâs tranquil and quiet now, I equally appreciate it when the raw power of nature is on full display.

đŠ YogOdyssey celebrated its first anniversary in business. During savasana, Jackie read passages from The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. Itâs a beautiful book, and I learned itâs also a 2023 Oscar-winning animated short film on Apple TV.

đ” My daughter Elizabeth loved having English musician Jacob Collier turn her and her fellow attendees into a choir at ACDAâs Cincinnati conference earlier this year. He did the same in London (June 2022) and the video of the electrifying performance is making the rounds again.
I love these posts....Like a collage of invitations to conjure my own memories and ponderings as I read Scott's!
